Q: what is widow on watch back made of?

I believe is is a high tempered glass. I am not easy on watches and have had no issues with this one.

Q: How long does the winding last when it's not being worn?

Will lose time in a day or so when not worn, but not much.

Q: Why does the date on the watch say "SAM 31 ?

That is Saturday in French I think.. English SAT is on the watch as well and if you set it so the English is displayed then at midnight the date wheel will skip the other language and go to SUN, etc. Hopefully this helps.

Q: What would explain failure or zero luminescence on all of the hour markers and hands on a brand new watch right out of the box?

Hello, Thank you for your inquiry, for the Automatic Sport Timer timepiece failure of the tritium is unlikely as the watch has only been out on the market for 2 years. If in fact it doesn't glow, it must be defective, and can be sent to our service center they will replace the tritium. They are under a 10 year warranty from the date of purchase from an authorized dealer. Regards, Customer Service
