Q: How does Biofreeze compare to using an ice pack?

The answer from the manufacturer isn't really accurate. There is one thing BioFreeze and ice packs have in common, which is distraction, and I'll explain that. The greatest value in the application of ice is in the first 24-48 hours after an injury with swelling, in which instance ice helps to keep swelling from getting worse, or even to reduce it. Pain relief is a different matter. Agents like BioFreeze work by stimulating nerve endings in the skin, which then transmit signals to the central nervous system (CNS) that compete with pain signals coming from the same part of the body. The CNS can process only so much information coming along those pathways simultaneously, and so this reduces the perception of pain. Only so many signals can "get through the gate" per unit time. This is called the "gating theory" of pain perception. Application of ice does this, too, but the skin can tolerate ice for no more than 20-30 minutes at a time without feeling really uncomfortable - and risking cold injury (the mildest form of frostbite, called "frostnip"). BioFreeze, by contrast, has an effect that lasts for hours after application and will not harm the skin (unless you are allergic to it).

Q: I've used perform pain relieving gel before. How is Biofreeze any different?

Biofreeze is different from Perform Pain Relieving Gel because Biofreeze has a slightly higher menthol level (4% versus 3.5%) and an optimized mix of ingredients, including arnica and camphor.
