Q: Would I be able to go free diving with this in a state park spring?

Q: I saw a military grade version that only last for 30min. How come these lasts for hours?

There are different grades of light sticks for different uses. The 30 min you saw where rated as High Intensity, those last for approximately 30-45 minutes at the maximum output. There is also an Ultra-High Intensity version which lasts for only a few minutes. Those are rated for 5 minutes of maximum output. They either put in a catalyst to speed up the reaction in the high intensity sticks or an inhibitor in the longer time sticks. The longer the time on the stick, the less light output. I hope that helps.

Blood shows up under blue light better.

Q: Do these have an expiration date? I'm thinking of putting them in my disaster kit.

Yes they do. The packs I bought early 2015 have the expiration date of 11/19 so they last over four years at least. They work great. Hope this helps.
