Q: Do you need a normal filter in addition to this? Or can this be the only filter you use to keep your tank clear?

U can jus use this filter but it will take a long time for the biological things to get right. If u get a filter that runs water it will only take about 5 days for the ph to get right an the ammonia to clear. So it would be a good idea to get a little back filter to speed up things an keep the water even more clear.

Q: Is this okay to have with live plants considering significant root growth?
