Yes, the aluminum backing plate is reusable, just need few minutes to change grits when combine metal lap disks to use.

Q: can this be used as a replacement disc for an old craftsman 6" belt and disc sander?

This aluminum disc is 6" dia x 1/2" Arbor x 9/32" thickness, as long as the size fit for your machine, it's work.

Q: What do you use to attach sanding disc to this?

I use this on a faceting machine. It sits horizontal and thin diamond topper laps sit on top of it. They are both held down then by a nut that screws down onto the top.
