Q: how durable or long lasting are these?

Not long lasting at all. The material seems to be too soft for the purpose. Company was nice to give me a refund, but mine only lasted a few days of use.

Q: will the 3 nails affect TSA screening (metal detectors) at airports?

Absolutely not. The deeper issue with these sole protectors is the tiny nail size that comes with the kit. The Chinese who fabricate these kits scrimp on both the mail size and poor adhesion of the pad to the sole. I had to find larger brads and use some fast- drying super glue to insure the pads would not come off after the first week of using the re-padded shoes. Sole Man
