Q: How heavy a base is recommended?

Buy a Gravipod. It is a canvas round "bag" that goes over the base pole. Fill it with sand bought from Home Depot or Lowes. Adds at lease 50 lbs of weight at the base you already have. Makes it very heavy and very stable. Also, another hint, but a round garden pot base with wheels and you will be able to roll to where you want it. You can thank me later for both of these recommendations. :)

I don’t know. I had this for less than one year before our house burned down. I loved the color and it really held up in Colorado wind.
