Yes... you can carry it scout style.

Q: Would this also be a good skinning knife?

A: No, not stock from Ka-Bar, it would NOT be good for skinning. These two folks here saying otherwise aren't hunters, clearly. It has a thick powdercoat that is notorious for getting blood/sticky fluids stuck in it (I am a hunter & have skinned many a hydes). It's a great knife! But as is/from the factory it's limited for skinning. That's why many folks using it for hunting end up removing the powdercoat themselves, so they can actually use it as a skinner. It also comes with zytel (nylon plastic) grips that's are quite slick. Many ppl change them to G-10 for this reason. So, combine slick grips with blood/fluid, add to that a blade with a super thick powdercoat that blood/fluid tends to stick to like a magnet? No, it's just not a great skinner UNTIL some modifications are made. Now after mods it's actually pretty good for said task... but definitely NOT before being modified. *The thick powdercoat is purely to protect the high carbon US made 1095 steel, which is prone to rust, btw. So once removed you'll really have to maintain it (even moreso than before) if you don't want it to rust.

Q: Why is this knife so expensive on Amazon? It is $83 elsewhere

They cost $70-to some a little more. If people are selling them for $83 they are losing money. I cost about 20% for fees and shipping and when you sell them on eBay or Amazon.
