Theo chocolate is extremely high in lead and cadmium. Why haven't you used procedures to lower that limit, like other dark chocolate brands have?

The safety and quality of our products is our top priority, and we are fully confident that our products meet the standards set forth in our industry and are safe to be consumed.

Heavy metals are naturally occurring in the soil and air all around the world and are present in many of the foods we eat (most commonly, leafy greens, root vegetables, nuts, fruits, and fish). In the case of chocolate, the source is the cocoa beans themselves, and is influenced by where they are grown, harvested and dried.

Theo proudly adheres to the standards set forth in our industry, and voluntarily commits ourselves to the highest standards for our supply chain and processes (including USDA organic certification, Fair For Life, and SQF certification. We’re confident in the safety of our products.

A new report was released in August 2022 on the causes and potential reduction methods for heavy metal in cocoa beans – including options such as drying practices and tree planting.

Our team is reviewing the results of the research report to identify opportunities for Theo to further reduce the presence of heavy metals in the cocoa beans we source and our chocolate. Theo is proud to source our cocoa beans through direct relationships with the farmers who grow and harvest our beans in the Eastern Congo through our trading partners, to ensure we are paying above fair trade and organic prices. We will be working with our partners in the region to improve the growing and harvesting practices to reduce the levels of heavy metals. As the sources of cadmium and lead differ, this may include adjustments to our sourcing strategy and working closely with the farmers who currently grow and harvest the beans to adjust their processes. These solutions do take time, but we are committed to implementing and measuring the effectiveness of these efforts.
