Q: The lid is soft or hard?

I wouldn't call the lids either soft or hard. They are more a flexible firm, the same material the buckets are made from, an HDPE plastic. Although these buckets w/lids could be frozen, I wouldn't try opening until they've come to room temperature, and would (like any plastic) try to avoid dropping or banging them while frozen. At room temperature, neither buckets, nor lids are a brittle plastic.

They are made of a high quality plastic. They are very sturdy. I highly recommend them.

Yes, these lids are a snap on kind that require you to peel off a strip of material from around the lid before you can remove it.

Q: Are these light proof?

Yes. They are food safe. I still store them in a cool dark location because, like any plastic, they will deteriorate with UV exposure.
