The diameter of the hole in the center is 3/8 inch. The diameter of the tube itself is 1 1/8 inch. Hope that helps. These are wonderful for helping my arthritic hands hold silverware and other items.

Q: Has anyone used these for crayons - regular crayola crayons are .8 cm and the large ones are 1.1 cm -- which doesn't seem to fit any of these?

You probably can use the small size with Jumbo crayons, but I am not 100% positive. You migh try using the small with a little duct tape! :<)

Q: can it be used under ground?

It's foam. I would think that it could be used underground.
