Q: Toyota's User Manual recommends against ANY trailer hitches, EVEN when used just to carry bicycles, etc. Is there any sensible explanation ?

They are just staying on the side of caution and probably wouldn't warrantee any kind of work resulting in damage from pulling of a trailer. It does put extra stress on the transaxle, engine, and braking system. However I use mine to transport a tow dolly and a Hitch mounted motorcycle carrier (the kind that the front tire goes on and the back tire trails on the ground- total weight of hitch and dirtbike ~350lb, tongue weight ~100lb) around hundreds of miles with no problem. Just use common sense. Keep in mind you'll have to figure out a solution for trailer lights if you want. As far as the hitch quality I was impressed. It bolted up in about 15 or 20 minutes with common handtools. I did not have to remove the muffler like it suggested just pushed it out-of-the-way. My 2010 Prius has plenty of power and braking to pull a small trailer and the flexibility of a hitch and being able to carry more cargo is a huge bonus.

No. It fits: 2010 - 2015 Toyota Prius 2012 - 2017 Toyota Prius v

Q: Will it fit a 2018 Prius?

I would say no. Based on what etrailer is showing for the 2017 prius you need a completely different mount, you need the 24966 Draw-Tite hitch.
