Q: Is it absolutely necessary to use a lug at the end of the wire, or can i insert the bare 6 awg wire into the terminal?

Of course you can just smash down the wire with the terminal nut and maybe larger washer on each side but that is not a very good or safe application. Especially not with a high amperage large wire 6 gauge wire. There is a good chance that it will loosen and arc in time. You can buy all kind off custom made wires with lugs on EBay.

Absolutely... That is what they are designed for. I have used hundreds of them in marine environments with zero failures.

Q: Does current flow direction matter? Is there a “line” and “load” and does polarity matter?

Flow does not really matter a circuit breaker will still pop but if you look at your breaker there is a indicator where the hotside connects

Q: what is the unit connected too?

What ever you connect it to but installs on the positive cable so the main power runs throw it so cut you main positive cable and insert this unit.
