Pre-installed. **Q: what is the red tab for ?** A: Hi. The way I understand it, the red tab is to cover a hose connector which some models carry. My 2009 Mini Coopper Clubman didn't have that hose, so I didn't use it. However, the tab did get on the way of the air filter box. So, I had to cut the red tab shorter so it could fit between the air box and the valve cover. Overall, the valve cover worked perfectly in my Mini, got rid of that P1497 code that my old valve cover was generating, the Mini ran much better. For a 1/3 of the price, this aftermarket OEM valve cover solves two problems, either a check engine light code or an oily leaking top portion of the valve cover. The part itself has some weight and built in gasket, no labels with all black exterior. The positives crank ventilation valve (PCV) is integrated into the top of the valve cover and was easy to replace with very little tools. The item fit perfect and solved my issue. My only complaint is the oil cap that came with the valve cover didn't fit very tight and came loose, allowing oil to splash all over the engine compartment. Luckily I'm a hoarder and I kept the old valve cover, which I was able to steal the cap from.
