Review: It's magic. We love it! - My son came home from a friend's house raving about this magic chess board. When we set ours up the first time, I wasn't sure what to expect. Wow! I surprised how cool it is to see the pieces glide automagically across the board. There must be a magnet or something inside each piece, but they feel just like normal chess pieces when you pick them up. The board is really quiet when it's moving the pieces around, which makes the magic all the more magical. When playing against the computer, you can gradually increase the difficulty setting from really easy to genius, which keeps the game fun for players of all experience levels. We're still on level 4 of 20, so there's little chance we'll get bored of it any time soon. Confession: we often end up with two or three people working together to try beating the computer at higher levels. We used to play chess maybe a couple times per year but now we're playing a couple games a week, about half of the time against each other instead of the computer. But we still use the "Kingdon Set" because it's so much nicer than the old cardboard set with plastic pieces we used before. Sometimes it gets confused when we switch between connecting it to my phone vs. my wife's but it always figures it out within a couple minutes. We haven't tried playing with remote friends & family yet, but we've tried having one player on the board and another on a phone at home and it works great. I'm going on a trip soon and looking forward to continuing our evening chess matches at a distance.
Review: Great present for parents and grandparents - The box came in a nice sleek box, very similar to Apple's packaging, most of set up was fine, except that it skipped over the fact that you need to set up the board before starting a game if you want to play against the computer. Once I had all of the pieces on the board, than the rest of the setup was very smooth. I liked using the app on my phone to select the level and see where the moves were happening. Also being able to continue to play on the physical board while out of my house by using the app was really cool, BUT make sure you put the board somewhere that dogs (and probably cats) can't get to it, as my 6 month old puppy grabbed one of the pieces while I was playing remotely which was an issue. I hadn't seen the latest commercial, before I started playing, but the idea that you can play a game from long distance, is REALLY cool, and I'm going to try that next time I play. My lone complaint after playing a couple of times, is when I had to put it away to make room on the table, storing the game pieces in the bland box they came in could be improved, just to make the piece holder with a bit more personality. The overall quality of the board, pieces and presentation is high end, and you feel like you have a very high quality product.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: If my Dad has a board and lives in Florida, can I just play him from Indiana with the app? I cant afford two boards.**
A: Your dad can play using the Android or iOS app, or using Chess.com any device or computer.

For Chess.com games, you'll both need an account (free account is fine), you'll have to add each other as Chess.com friends. To play with your board, you'll need to link your Chess.com account to your Square Off app, then you'll need to use the Square Off app to send them a game request.

It's very easy to do, although In my experience, there's a delay between adding someone as a friend and having them show up to challenge to a game. Actually, it may be that disconnecting and reconnecting your Chess.com will immediately refresh your friends... I didn't try that, but I will next time.

**Q: How does it handle moving a knight if there are other pieces in the way?**
A: The knight is thin enough to slip between the pieces. The other pieces do not move out of its way. They have a video showing it.

**Q: do you need a phone or will a computer do?**
A: You will need a phone or tablet with Android or iOS, there is no desktop application that I know of. The connection is over Bluetooth -- I suppose there's a chance you could run the Android app in an Android emulator under Windows or MacOS, but I haven't tried that.

**Q: how does it handle promotion or underpromotion?**
A: A more detailed description: when you get a pawn to the 8th rank, the board will beep quickly, 3 times. When you glance at the app, there will be a little grid displayed, with a knight, bishop, rook and queen... you select which one you want to promote to, and manually swap in the other piece. If the automated side gets a pawn to the 8th rank, you'll get the 3 beeps and the app will display the piece your AI or human opponent has chosen to promote to... again, you have to manually swap in the extra queen or other piece. There's one extra queen of each color... if the human player needs a 3rd (or 4th) queen, you can use the old "flip a rook upside down" convention to represent a queen, but I'm almost positive the automated side can't move an upside down piece (they move with magnets attracting metal in the base of the pieces). So you'll have to use captured right-side-up piece, doesn't matter which piece... the board will treat it like whatever it was promoted to, and display it as that piece on the app's board display. Alternately, you can use an upside-down rook for the automated side, keep the app board display handy, and move the promoted piece when you see that the board has attempted to move it.

### ⭐ Unreliable and awful customer service
*by A***F on February 1, 2023*

Was super excited about this product. It worked great for 9 Months and then showed erratic movements some of the time. i replaced the charger, updated the firmware and finally contacted customer service 3 months out of warranty (1 year). At this point, it was Unplayable.. got sent on fools errand, sent videos, Reset, raindance .. finally said it needs a new motherboard and its out of warranty's so wanted to charge $150 + shipping to me to fix myself if they sent motherboard. Expensive white elephant at this point. Bad quality product and bad customer service.
