I used it with two different speaker system. One was with a set of Teals and the other Magnepan 3.7i. **Q: need preamp to operate?** A: I believe it was designed to augment a preamp that has no tone control, such as my Musical Fidelity pre. **Q: Is this compatible with Marantz NR1200?** A: Only if you use it on a single source, say you use it CD player.
