A: The best mix would be 40% Perlite and 60% for cuttings or seed starting!

A: Perlite is used in the garden to prevent soil compaction, improve aeration and retain moisture. ... To answer your question YES is does absorb water.  However Perlite will dry out too rapidly for water-loving plants.
