Story Alex Mercer was once a scientist for the prominent medical research corporation, Gentek, but one day he wakes up to find himself a shape-shifter with absolute mastery over his genetic structure, but no memory of how this came to be. Taking to the streets of New York City in search of answers, he quickly encounters a web of lies and vows to rip the truth from those who have hidden it from him and the world.A few other things that Alex also learns quickly is that he is not alone in possessing amazing abilities, that there is a secret war brewing in New York City and he is on its front lines. A deadly infection has spilled out of control and the government has seized the media to stop the spread of information and has placed New York under quarantine as martial law is instated; igniting a firestorm of combat, carnage and death. As he roams the city, he faces an ever growing army of infected creatures warped and changed by the virus. As it spreads, the virus overwrites the genetics of those it infects, warping and changing their form into something else, something that seems to have been planned. The answers he seeks appear to be tied to the virus, so he rushes to discover the truth behind it, but standing against him and his goal is Project Blackwatch. An elite army specialist force, they are tasked with halting the spread of the virus at any cost and are eager to bring Alex in dead or alive to determine his connection to it. It would seem that they are potentially both enemy and ally to Alex's cause. Will Alex assist Blackwatch in its hunt, or join forces with the virus and subjugate humanity, pushing his powers to the limit as the genetic shackles of humanity fall by the wayside? That choice is up to the player in Prototype.Gameplay In Prototype players engage in 'Deceive or Destroy' gameplay. This allows gamers the choice to either blend in with the population and covertly progress through the story, or fully unleash Alex’s powers, and move through New York City like a walking slaughterhouse, taking control of military vehicles, and causing destruction at every turn.Although Alex is literally strong enough to fling people and large objects around easily, his most intriguing power is his ability to 'consume' people. In doing this he acquires their memories, abilities, and their appearance. New memories help him to solve the mystery of how he got the way he is, while new appearances allow him to shape-shift into new useful forms at will and abilities allow him to manoeuvre in parts of the game requiring specific skills in specific situations. In addition, Alex's consumption of people also facilitates his ability to transform his physical body and manipulate his senses. Most weapons acquired in this way are outgrowths from his appendages like exaggerated blades, shields, whips and claws used for brutal close combat, but consumption also allows for powerful abilities like thermal vision, which provides for vision through smoke and obstacles, as well as 'infected vision' with which Alex can detect hotspots of viral infection throughout the city.Key Features:Fast and Deadly Combat - Shape-shift your body to the situation at hand ... from claws to blades to hammers to whips, as you choose the right weapon for the situation. Change to shield or armour for defence or use advanced sensory powers (thermal vision, infected vision) to track your enemies.Over-the-top Locomotion - Seamlessly and fluidly bound from building to building, run up walls, bounce off cars and everything in your path. Adaptive parkour lets you move freely through the open-world environments of New York City.Unique Disguising Abilities - Consume anyone at anytime, take on their appearance and assume their memories and special abilities.Deep Conspiracy Driven Storyline - Wake up with no memory of the past ... just mysterious powers and a link to a town in Idaho. Delve into the mysteries of your origin, the true nature of your power and your part in a conspiracy 40 years in the making.Parkour Inspired In-game Movement - Alex Mercer's movements are inspired by Parkour, a mostly urban activity bordering on both art and martial arts that aims at moving the human body from one point to another as smoothly, efficiently and quickly as possible. Recent examples of it gained worldwide attention in chase scenes in the 2007 film "Casino Royale."PlayStation Trophies - Add to your collection of PlayStation trophies as you play.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Amazing game
*by A***R on 6 October 2017*

One of the best games ever created, received on time.

### ⭐⭐⭐ Addictive but difficult
*by J***O on 20 August 2012*

The beginning of this game is quite innocent. The opening gameplay sequence is a little bit overwhelming but if you take the time to learn the controls you'll find that the game is very careful in terms of how it teaches you how to play later on. After this between missions you're given the the open world to roam around in however you please, to do whatever you want, whether this be consuming people or throwing their cars at choppers. The main annoying part of this game is the overwhelming amount of enemies the game throws at you, almost as if the only way Activision knows how to increase the game difficulty is by adding more people and giving them rocket launchers. If the testing reveals that one particular level is too easy, just give someone a rocket launcher, if he still passes the level, give everyone rocket launchers. Because it's pretty much done by the same people, it's very similar to Spiderman 2 on the PS2; you're given the freedom to roam around in Manhattan which looks very much the same, you can run up walls and jump off with a selection of optional upgrades, and you're given hints which give points throughout the city. And I couldn't help but notice my problem was the same with Spiderman 2 as-well, the way the difficulty is only determined with how many people have rocket launchers and how quickly they spawn out of nowhere. My other problem with this is, and this might only be because it took about 75% of the game to figure out where the Subtitles button is, is that I can't stand how every character in the game besides Elizabeth Greene mutters throughout their dialogue. I don't know why it's such a big thing in modern media, but everyone mutters and it makes things seem so unbearable. I only just figured out what was going on by catching onto certain key words and the way Alex briefs himself at the start of every mission, as-well reading the objectives on the pause menu. But other than knowing you're going to die as soon as somebody calls for a strike team, having a rocket shoved up your arse every-time you stand still with the impossible requirement to discretely disguise and unbearably put up with characters muttering constantly, the storyline is very interesting and it has lots of interesting twists. The progression of the viral infection throughout Manhattan and slowly decreasing numbers of cities that are kept 'safe' by martial law makes the plot very interesting, with the reminders of how the aftermath came to be at the of every 'episode'.The gameplay can be fun when out of mission when you're in the mood where you just want to kill people and challenge the military, but only in the first half of the game. Mess with the military anywhere in the second half of the game, and like I said, you can't even stand still without having thousands of rockets inserted into your anus. That, of-course makes the gameplay less fun and raises the likelihood of having an anxiety attack when you're watching Alex Mercer being swept from left to right because of how quickly you're getting blown to pieces by missiles; you know, the ones you can never get away from because there is constantly somebody calling for a strike team to make you forget what you're doing and fight choppers forever (and don't think about disguising, they're everywhere man!)

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good but not great
*by D***D on 31 August 2010*

Prototype follows 18 days in the life of Alex Mercer who, after waking up in a morgue with no memories, has suddenly gained the ability to alter himself on the genetic level. Wanted by the military, he is on a mission to find out why this has happened to him and to discover the mysterious circumstances behind a virus that has been released into the city.First i must say that i did like this game a lot it has a good storyline, decent enough graphics and fun gameplay. However there were a few thing that did bother me about it. I think the biggest problem with this game is that it does get very repetitive at least at the beginning anyway. You go find a guy, consume him and take his memories. Another thing that annoyed me was the fact that everyone hates you in the game so unless you are in disguise, which means you are limited to just walking around do anything else and you will be detected, you are constantly under attack which does get a bit boring after a while.Despite these things the game is very good, freeroaming around the city is great particularly if you are in an infected zone. It is great fun running through a group of infected people with Alex's armour equipped and watching them getting flung as he pushes them out of the way. Also your selection of weapons and equipment makes combat varied and interesting. One thing i must point out is that, although this is obviously no fault of the game, i bought this game after playing through infamous which, in my opinion, is just better. Because of this i probably didn't enjoy this as much as i would have if i had played this one first. Therefore i would advise that if you were torn between getting either this or infamous i would get this one first.
