You can get ESP32-S3 boards for the same price which have much better specs. It really depends on your use-case, the 8266 is plenty capable of anything you'd use an Arduino (atmega series) for, but if you plan to do anything CPU or network intensive, the higher clocked dual-core, more flash/RAM, and better onboard peripherals of the ESP32 series will make a big difference. I didn't know this when I got them and have since switched. That being said, these boards are well-made and work fine. Had no issue using the Arduino IDE to program them, including OTA via wifi. Also tried out the 8266 port of micropython with no issues. You do not need to hold down the boot button when flashing like you do with some boards. There is a blue power led and another blue LED connected to pin 2. Oddly this led is reversed so it's on when the pin is low and off when the pin is high. So while I'd strongly recommend an ESP32-based board over 8266, if you specifically need an 8266 these will get the job done. Review: All three work perfectly - I used all three.
