## Description

Like its predecessor Bathhouse Betty, Bette Midler's Bette spends a good deal of its playing time on ambitious, smartly chosen songs. Even the biggest pop-ballad success here is a Dionne Warwick-style take on the Elvis Costello/Burt Bacharach, weeper "God Give Me Strength", rather than a dire work of schlock such as "The Wind Beneath My Wings". Elsewhere, Midler continues to indulge her cheeky side--the album's working title was Bette, Bath and Beyond--with KirstyMacColl's Cuban-influenced "In These Shoes" and a revival of Teddy Pendergrass' classic "Love TKO" with an impressively throaty vocal. The handful of Hallmark-esque tunes near disc's end doesn't diminish the subtlety and taste of the rest. --Park Slope

Review: Somewhat subdued, but it's got variety - You can usually count on Bette Midler to come up with an album featuring some odd numbers and plenty of variety. This album is no exception. I missed it when it was released in 2000, and I am very happy to have discovered this gem now. The album begins with "That's How Heartaches Are Made", a nice, laid-back mid-tempo R&B track, almost a girl-group song. In the same vein we have two easygoing covers: "Just My Imagination" from The Temptations and "Shining Star" from Earth Wind & Fire. There are two serious ballads, each with unobtrusive arrangements dominated by piano: "Color Of Roses" and "When Your Life Was Low". As always, Bette sings them with great feeling. Things are less mellow on "In These Shoes", a boisterous track which has a Latin beat and horns, some Spanish lyrics, and sexual innuendo (familiar territory for Bette): "I once met a man...Wherever he went he said 'Let's make love on a mountain top/Under the stars, on a big hard rock.' I said 'In these shoes? Honey, let's do it here.' " Still lively, but not quite so rollicking, is "Bless You Child", sounding a lot like latter-day disco. And speaking of disco, "Love TKO" is an excellent Barry White-ish track, sounding a lot like EARLY disco even though it was not released originally until 1980. The one remaining happy song is "Nobody Else But You", written by Bette and Marc Shaiman. They must have channeled Laura Nyro, because this very breezy song about a lady who considers herself lucky in love sounds like it could have been penned by Laura herself. The two remaining tracks are the most divergent. "God Give Me Strength", the very dramatic and sad heartbreak song from the film "Grace Of My Heart", is in a class by itself. It has a demanding range, with very low and very high notes. Bette handles it beautifully and it is the main reason I bought this album. On a completely different level, "Moses" is the oddest song on the album. It is a country/folk tune about a lady who is lonely and has "an empty apartment and a best friend who is queer". It's not awful but, musically speaking, I don't relate to it very much.
Review: Great CD - I still enjoy listening to a CD in the car. I needed to learn a Bette Midler song, so I bought this CD. It came in perfect condition and earlier than expected. Thanks!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Overlooked Midler Classic!
*by K***K on January 20, 2016*

What you have here is something great that got looked over! When Bette sings,"And add my regrets to the tears in the rain,For that's what the color of roses contain",my heart sinks to my stomach! This stuff is priceless! "Color of Roses", is now my favorite Midler song now! This music is great! Patti Griffin's " Moses",Elvis Costello's and Burt Bachrach's,"God Give Me Strength"the late Kirsty McCall's ,"In These Shoes",buy it,play it,you will love it!
