The device wasn't initially recognised by either my ipad nor my iphone, both running up-to-date iOS. I discovered that it's important to connect the reader (without the card inserted) to the iOS device, and then insert the card (in my case, pushing it firmly down into the reader). That brought up the 'import' menu and from there everything is intuitive.
