Review: Phenomenal, absolutely amazing antenna for $68 - I purchased this Solarcon A-99 antenna from desertcart on July 5th, 2019 for $68. After being out of CB for 45 years, I decided to get back into radio. I passed my technician, general and extra exams and became an amateur radio operator in 2022. Out of curiosity, I thought I would experiment by mounting this A-99 antenna about 20 ft. up in a tree and see what it could do. Boy was I in for a great surprise! Most shocking of all was this A-99 tunes in 10 meters, 11 meters, 12 meters, 15 meters and 17 meters as well. I have contacted and spoken to people all over the world using this simple and inexpensive antenna. Every state in North America, many countries in South America, Europe, Central America, South Pacific, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and the list goes on and on and on. And all for $68? Kinda hard to beat that. As you can see, I mounted this A-99 about 20 ft. up in a tree. If you paint the fiberglass vertical with a non-metallic green paint, it is nearly totally stealth. We have repeatedly experienced winds of 30-75 mph here for the last two years...this A-99 takes a lickin' and just keeps on tickin'. This Solarcon A-99 has some tuning rings on the base so you can fine tune it to various frequencies. I set the tuning rings all the way to the top. I was totally shocked to discover this Solarcon A-99 has low SWR for most of 10 and 11 meters... yes, 1:1 at 26.9 MHz-27.4 MHz. The SWR begins to rise when you get up into the 28 MHz's, but it still works well all the way up into the 29 MHz's. I recently discovered the exciting world of FM at 29 MHz and this A-99 works wonders on FM. You will need an antenna tuner for 15 and 17 meters. I was totally blown away after speaking to people all over the world on 15 and 17 meters with this antenna. People tell me I should not run excessive power on 15 and 17 meters, so I stick with the Yaesu FT DX 10 at one hundred watts and have never had a problem on those bands. On 10 meters, people tell me this A-99 can accept 1000+ watts. I have only tried it up to 800 watts and have never had a problem. I am not sure why the price on this antenna has more than doubled in the last year or so. I am not sure if it is worth the $175 asking price. I am totally convinced the $68 I paid for this new antenna in 2019 on desertcart was totally worth it. Last, I hear many people get 10-20 years of use out of the Solarcon A-99. But some people complain about the fiberglass degrading. The cure for this challenge is super simple: coat the fiberglass with a non-metallic paint and you will be good to go for many, many years to come. 73's to all!
Review: Works good. - Works great and easy to put up. SWAR is great.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: can this be mounted right next to a tv over the air type antenna? anything else would be difficult....for my house.**
A: Hi, Not sure what you mean by "right next to". It is usually best to not put two antennas close together especially if one of the antennas is a transmitting antenna. Can you mount the A-99 above the TV ant, say 6-10 feet?

**Q: Can I mount this on a vertical tree branch? Or does this have to be mounted on a metal pole?**
A: yes you can mount the 99 on a tree limb, but, if you do so, you must, run a 12 gauge copper wire (strained or solid) if any coating is on the wire, peel it back 18" from the end and wrap the bare part around the bottom of the 99 antenna where normally the 2 mounting clamps go, after wraping tight, take some good, not the cheap type electrical tape and wrap around all the expose copper wire you just wrapped, make a solid wrap around at least 5 times around. where the taped ends when you cut it off from the roll, take a plastic tie wrap and put it close to the end of the tape, so later on, it can"t come un_done. now the length of the copper wire must be long enough to run down your tree to the bottom of the ground. now get you a grounding stake from lowes or home depot and close to the tree or where ever you want to put it, drive it into the ground where theres only 6" sticking up. now at the end of your 12 gauge copper wire cut back 12" of insulation and wrap the bare copper wire from the end around the grounding stake tight thats sticking out of the ground. take 2 radiator clamps 1 1/2" and tighten around and over the bare copper wire and tighten each one as you go to get as tight as possible, but don't over tighten. thats it, run your coax from the antenna along your ground wire down to about 15 feet from the bottom of the tree and let the coax swing over to the corner of your house or shed and then run it where it need to go to get to your radio. your done, also, remember on the 99 antenna, they must be as high as 36 feet to work 100%, but, the higher you get it, the better it operates on transmit and especially receive..... good luck! enjoy! daymon

**Q: seeing there isn't a full picture of it. Does it come to attach to a mast? I have all the ubolts and coax**
A: The u-bolts squeeze the aluminum base directly against the mast. There are no special brackets to attach this antenna to the mast.

**Q: what is the gain-----and is it 1/2 or 5/8 wave**
A: Universal Radio sez: The Solarcon A99 is a half wave over a quarter wave variable mutual inductance antenna. There is nothing in the literature about it. Consider it a 1/2 wave. In other words the top 2 sections are just fiberglass with a wire in it and the bottom section has a couple of tuning coils inside. If you check with a meter you will see a DC short because of the coils. You can check the 'net and find a circuit diagram and pictorials of the parts.easily.
