The voices were outstandingly good and the animation was extraordinary. It avoids all that cloying gooiness that often spoils animations. There is always a bit of sentimentality in films like this but nothing I couldn't handle. All the elements of the story set in some idealised medieval period came together in a way that suspended disbelief. The colours and textures are as vivid as anything I've ever seen in an animation and the animals have a sinuous living quality. The music was good and the story had some of the darkness of a real fairy tale. The central character Merida is a good strong heroine to counterbalance all that Barbie crap that little girls have to contend with. The little brothers didn't appeal so much because they were too cute. I bought it for my sister's 9 year old but I haven't heard how she liked it yet. I'd seen good reviews and go along with them. The voices and music enhanced it. It was scarier than I had expected - younger children should probably have an adult with them - on the other hand I grew up reading Grimm's fairy tales and not much is as scary as they are to a child! It covered serious issues if one chose to see it that way, but with a light humourous touch and ended with a thoroughly up beat message.
