Another way to look at it is that there is one row of pins is all GND and one row that has 3 +12V pins next to 1 GND pin. This lone GND pin is a also a presence detect pin to identify to your card that you have connected an 8 pin connector. If you flip the orientation of the connectors through 180° you will have 3 +12v pins and one GND pin connected to the same rail causing a short circuit. This is because the row of GND pins are all commoned together on the adapter. You’ll need to buy the orientation you need.
