Each side is machined to the depth where it intersects the other machined sides. By doing this the center is now able to float around and be separate from the outer cage. The Aluminum dice are milled to shape and then anodized. That way the numbers and the floating feature machined into each side will show off the bare aluminum and give a really good contrast to the anodized surface! It isn't clear from the description, but these are cut from a single piece of aluminum in such a way that there's a cage that surrounds the die floating inside.The rattling the dice make as you roll them is awesome. they roll well, for the most part. These should be more random than a cast or molded die, as well.The only knock I have on this set is in rolling the d20. It will often stop rolling one of the vertices rather than the face, because two faces will poke out past the cage and prop it up, requiring a re-roll.
