Trying to screw the cable end cap and ferrule onto the indicator chain end is not how this part works. It's a quality part at a good price that does the job well, if you know how to install it. Review: Exactly what I needed for my 3spd - This was an inexpensive replacement for the antiquated cable on an old English three-speed bicycle I recently acquired. This newer version does the same time, but it is different in a couple of ways: 1) Older shifting house for 3spds did not cover most of the cable, stopping a little short of the fulcrum point for the cable. This newer version goes all the way, but I shortened mine to continue using the original fulcrum point (a little pulley attached to the frame). You can use cable cutters or a carbon cutoff wheel with a Dremel rotary tool. 2) This newer cable has an anchorage piece that grabs onto the end of the cable with a little bolt and nut. The older versions had a built-in ferrule that sat inside an adjustable screw piece that screwed into the indicator chain piece. In this new version, you cut off the length of cable you need, attach on the anchorage point onto the cable end, and hook the anchorage point to the indicator chain.
