The idea is to get kids to know the answer to 9+8 (for example) without thinking about it. Her teacher said that while she knew 9+8 is 17, she needed to get it out quicker. The teacher recommended flash cards to increase speed. While flash cards are fine, they aren't all that exciting for kids. This is like electronic flashcards, and my child finds it enjoyable. Like have them work on just 8's etc.?** A: Yes, but it's hard to find. You hit "Mul" then it asks you to press 1-8 for level. Level 2 is another level that lets you separate them by table, so I'll describe that level. Then input 8 if you want to practice 8's and press enter. It allows practicing 1's through 12's. Once the drill starts, it's annoying is that you have to press enter after each answer, and also surprising that it doesn't show the correct answer if the child answers wrong. It goes until you get eventually answer each question right (for instance if you get 8 X 7 wrong it will randomly keep going back to 8 x 7 until you get it right) then says "terrific" or "super" even if you got it wrong fifty times, and shows you how many seconds it took you to go through that table. **Q: Can you use headphones** A: No, there is no headphone slot. **Q: do children find this confusing since math problems are usually done vertically and not horizontally?** A: I am an elementary school math teacher and I can verify that students are introduced to horizontal math problems very early. Most curriculums actually introduce horizontal problems first and vertical problems later. **Q: Can this devise save the progress of multiple children who are at different levels or would I need to buy one for each child?** A: I haven't ever saved anything. We just choose what we'd like to work on that day. It's multi functional. I like several things about the game. The directions are clear and simple. The game is easy to use. The variety of levels provides both practice and and a challenge. The Math Whiz has been durable thus far, it has been dropped to no ill effect. There are a few minor issues with the Math Whiz. As others have mentioned, the display is not backlit, making play in a darkened car or room impractical. I have not, however, had issues reading it over my child's shoulder. The buttons can be "sticky", meaning a child may have to press a button hard or more than once. This has frustrated my son, who wants to be as fast as possible, on several occasions. Despite the minor problems, my son looks forward to using the Math Whiz daily. Children who, like him, enjoy competing with themselves will play repeatedly to beat their previous time. This helps them develop automaticity with math facts, without the whining and complaining that usually come with drilling.
