Thanks.** A: Presumably somewhere on the plant earth. If you are buying these for installing draw slides, they work great and do not interfere with the operation of the slide. So, I would continue buying them even if they came from mars. Screws I have found at the local home improvement stores do not work properly with draw slides. If you are buying them for something else, then caring if it is Pennsylvania steel, Indiana steel, or overseas might be a legitimate question. Unfortunately I do not know what city they come from. **Q: Is predrilling required?** A: Predrilling is not required for most wood applications, but I would recommend it to reduce possibility of splitting. The screw tips are adequately sharp so that installaion without predrilling is possible, at least with a screw gun or drill. Installation with a screw driver, manually, might be more difficult, especially in hardwoods. **Q: can these be used under thin set mortar?** A: These are wood screws that are not meant to be counter sunk. They are zinc not stainless steel. Not sure why you are covering up wood with thin set. Why not use Hardiboard in place of wood and Hardi screws and then cover in Thinset? **Q: I will be attaching poles to a half-inch thick wooden fence using metal U-brackets. Are these screws suitable?** A: Screws are probably fine depending on what's attached to those poles. They're indoor cabinet screws though so they will likely rust very quickly and don't have a very large head. If it's treated pine pickets they will corrode into nothing very quickly. Pickets are not structural building materials though. Regardless of what screw you use, they will likely pull out iif those piles have any load. Id probably use a pan head, zinc coated, sheet metal screw.
