Review: Kingwin Mobile Rack hotswap bay - This review refers to the "Kingwin Universal Hot Swap Mobile Rack" (KF-255-BK) product. Some years ago, bays like these were easier to find and more manufacturers (of repute) made them. Now, it's harder to find these but I consider them important pieces of hardware. This is a simple, but effective hotswap bay that fits both regular HDDs as well as smaller drives such as SSDs. It takes up the same space as a DVD-ROM drive in your case, except that it is shorter internally. The latter does mean that any drives you insert into it will stick out/hang over the front edge (which is totally fine with me), but it also means that it takes up less spaces inside your PC case which can come in handy. It is true that the materials are a bit "light" or flimsy, but then this is a simple bay with just a data and power throughput. Unless you're rough with it, it should be fine. It is great for simple file transfers/drive backups. It has a power button on the left side, which means you can insert drives (or keep drives inserted) without them being recognized or loaded by your OS. Once you turn the button on, the drives will load. Just make sure you have hotswap enabled in your BIOS/UEFI. Under the power button it has a red power led indicator, next to which is the green data transfer led indicator, so you can see when it's reading/writing files. Overall, I'd say this is a good hotswap bay. It is very simple but that's kind of what I like about it. I think it could be improved by a little better/firmer materials so that there is less flex in some of the components. Be aware that the triangular key entry on the locking mechanism for the the 3-1/2" drive door is made of extremely soft pot metal and after a number of locking and unlocking cycles while changing drives in and out has deformed to the point where it's unusable even though I used extreme care once I discovered this problem it just continued to get worse, so now I have to leave it unlocked. The same key entry on the 2-1/2" drive door is made of stainless steel and does not suffer from the same weakness.This is a pretty serious defect in an otherwise very good product, and if there was something like this made by a competitor that didn't suffer from this weakness, I would try that by so far I haven't been able to find anything like it. I've used several of these for a long time now. i also used the model of these things that Kingwin made and sold BEFORE they came out with the 255 model. FREE HINT: DO NOT get the older model, which has a lower model number, I think. (They probably aren't even available anymore anyway.) The older model had just one push-button in front and was way worse than the 255 model in several ways, e.g. didn't fully support SATA III (6Gb/s), had only a power light and no separate access/activity light, and the one on/off switch didn't even work properly. This newer (255) model fixed all of those problems and works well for a wide variety of drives, both 3.5" and 2.5" and also spinning media and/or SSD. The one and only small annoyance that remains for the 255 model is that the SATA connectors on the back are not the kind that give you that nice satisfying "click" sound when you use the latching type of SATA data cables to connect these racks. You can use any kind of SATA data cables with these racks, but you just won't get that nice comforting click sound when you plug in your latching type SATA cables. (You WILL get that nice click sound when you wire up most other kinds of SATA devices, such as hard drives and optical drives, with the latching type SATA cables, so it is fair to say that these racks are deficient in this respect, relative to most other SATA devices.) Just one other thing: DO NOT do as I have done. Do not learn the hard way that old fashioned 3.5" rotating media hard drives can and do easily produce enough heat to cook themselves alive, in just a short time, if they do not have a constant stream of air blowing over them. if/when you use these racks with any 3.5" spinning media hard drive, DO NOT do that for more than a few minutes UNLESS you point some external fan at the hard drive. Otherwise you will fry the hard drive. This is NOT generally an issue for any kind of 2.5" drives, either spinning media or SSD. (Those just don't ever get very hot, even if not well ventilated.) The little 4" USB-powered fans are good for use with these racks when the racks themselves have a 3.5" drives in them.
