Q: I have a very low ceiling with only a 1.5" clearance/top casing to attach it to. What is the clearance of this unit at the top?

You can pull up the spec dimensions on a website to get the size of the mounting piece for over the door. But if you have solid backing over the door, I would say you could make it work because the height of the mounting piece is less than 1.5 inch if I recall. I have hung 3 and they worked out well for me.

Q: Does this come with the soffit plate for mounting to the bottom of the jam, or just the arm shoe bracket?

It also comes with the Parallel arm Bracket.

Q: Can I get this with a black finish?

We only carry the 689 & 690 finish.

Q: Does this have a back check?

No, this is a non-hold-open closer. The closer with backcheck would have an H suffix.
