They are solid, nice and thick and look expensive. The color is rich and the pattern of "inset" mother of pearl is well done--the reproduction is detailed and nice and clear. The bowls and large dishes have an attractive "faded" pattern effect. The dishes arrived on the date promised, packed in their manufacturer's box with cardboard reinforcement, which was then inside a larger, sturdier cardboard box stuffed with heavy brown paper. Unlike what has happened to some people who ordered this set, none of the dishes were broken or chipped. However, there is only a thin piece of white paper separating the dishes. I wash these dishes by hand (not a biggie for me), so cannot comment on their holding up in the dishwasher, although the instructions say they are for top rack use only. I also believe that they are not microwaveable, like a lot of melamine dish models.
