No, the MS740 would not work to detect nails in rough cut lumber, because it needs to be depressed against the scanning surface the whole time that it is scanning. A better tool for this application would be the Zircon MetalliScanner M40. Thank you. **Q: Can i use 9v lithium battery? it has a max typical voltage of 9.6v.** A: Hello. We do not recommend using a lithium battery.
