I've seen some that are just two metal wires.** A: Turning the knob on the handle turns the "unique spinner stirring mechanism" which are just two metal wires located just slightly higher than the uncooked popcorn. Once the popcorn starts popping, this rotating wire keeps the cooked popcorn moving, and therefore not burning, while not moving the uncooked kernels below. **Q: Are the gears plastic or metal?** A: I purchased this one from a store a few years ago, the plastic gears melted. So frustrating that some seem to have plastic some metal gears?? **Q: Can you make caramel popcorn with this one? (i.e. add granulated sugar just before it starts popping)** A: We do not recommend making the stickier recipes (such as caramel corn) in our poppers. **Q: I lost the instruction manual and would like to get another.
