We are in an RV so I use the small tanks for one or two nights stops and when camping for a week I use the 20# propane bottle with the adapter to do cooking. Cost about $25.00, but handy to have. Hope this information is useful for you. **Q: How long do the small canisters last?** A: I grill a couple of times a week and I am on my second canister since May 1st of this year. Probably one a month if you only grill a couple pieces of chicken or steaks each time. More if you are cooking something big. Consider buying an adapter and a larger tank if you are doing more. **Q: Can I use this on the tailgate of my truck or does it burn too hot and will melt the plastic cover on the tailgate?** A: The grill is designed for table top use and should be fine for your tail gate. If you are worried, put a couple of large tiles or some other fire resistant material under the grill.
