Review: Nice little Whittler - Every knife i buy, i pass it first to my cleaning, oiling, checking station. This one passed perfectly. It needed the oiling and leaning as every Rought RIder i have. Fit and finish is according to price. nice in this one. no air on liners. Good transition between bolsters and scales. This one is smaller than the other RR whittlers and does not use the backspacing liner as other whittlers, but the main blade does use the 2 springs from the other blades. The size y very pocketable and the blade combination is nice. The Main blade and the pen blade come with a nice grind on top of the blade. The main blade at first is nail braker but after cleaning and oling and braking it down a bit it comes softer. The 2 secondary blades have half stops. I was a bit scared to make the purchase but i am happy now. Recomended. (just clean it and oil it on arrival)
Review: Good Whittler - Handle 3 1/4" long x 7/16" thick. No gaps between bolsters and bone slabs, no gaps between slabs and brass liners. Can see daylight between backsprings, slight gap in the center(see photo), not bad. No gaps between bolsters and liners, no gaps between blade tangs and liners. Blades are polished, taper ground, 440 stainless steel. Blades are useably sharp, and the bevels are consistant with the blade contours, easily cut rope, rubber hose, cardboard, make shavings from sticks, strip wire, ect., most people won't feel the need to sharpen further. This is a split back folder, meaning that the two small blades are on one end and each tensioned by one spring whereas the main blade (see photo) is on the other end alone and is tensioned by both springs. Main spearpoint blade is 1 7/8" long x 1/2" wide, blade tang is .130" thick, blade is .080" thick at the tang end tapering to .030" thick at the point(see photo). Pull to open main blade is a little hard, this appears to be intentional, the cam part of the tang that tensions the backspring is large so as to increase tension on both springs, this makes it harder to accidentally close blade. Nail nick is deep and sufficient to open this blade. Coping blade is 1 3/8" long x .288" wide x .035" thick, nail nick is sufficient for the mild pull to open this blade, this blade has a well defined half stop between open and closed. Pen blade is 1 3/8" long x 5/16" wide x .035" thick, nail nick is sufficient for the mild pull to open this blade, this blade also has a well defined half stop between open and closed. Overall finish is very good, fit is good. The gap between the backsprings lost a star for this knife, if this knife were a premium knife it would have lost two stars. I don't see this tiny gap as a problem, if it were, one star, junk is junk no matter the price. This knife seems to be a good whittler, this is the first stockman pattern I have had where the main blade is not to heavy for for finer whittling, my other folders have too thick of a blade hence too blunt a bevel for any thing except rough work. The thinner blades on this knife will be better for finer whittling, I will hone and strop all blades to fine carving sharp, this will probably be my favorite folder for whittling.
