On paper, that may not seem like a very compelling premise for a video game, but under the confident and creative direction of Josef Fares, the team at Hazelight have created an engaging, interactive masterpiece. In terms of gameplay, It Takes Two has the heart and soul of a Toy Story movie, the platforming and gadgets of Ratchet and Clank, the mind-bending puzzles of Portal 2, and the stressful boss fights of Cuphead. This game has something for everyone, and the number of different and inventive game mechanics is staggering. After a while, I lost count and thought, “They can’t possibly introduce something new again.” But they do! And they do so exceptionally well! My only complaint (and it’s a really minor one) is that the game doesn’t have a final boss. After enduring one hectic boss fight after another, I expected the ending to conclude with one. Nevertheless, the game is still amazing with plenty of minigames to find after the story mode. It’s hard for me to think of how Hazelight can possibly top It Takes Two.
