The main difference here is the curve of the razor blade, versus the blade remaining straight on the single edged razor. The curve serves a purpose when scoring, it allows you to get a nice cut under the skin of the loaf, not just a straight cut, which leads to not as nice of an ear. So, yes, you can absolutely use a razor, but it won't ever get quite the same results that you would with the lame. **Q: Where is this made?** A: I looked for it but couldn't find any country of origin label on the package, instructions or the lame itself (Is that legal?) **Q: How long will one blade stay sharp enough to get a good cut? And where do you get replacement blades?** A: Replacements were sent with the product. I have no idea how long each blades lasts - but I have been using the same blade for three months **Q: How long/thick is the product dimensions wise?** A: From the end of the razor to the end of the handle it is 7 inches long. I am a female and it fits comfortable in the grip of my hand.
