These are great for hot and cold foods, snacks (I like them for fruit), and even just pretzels/nuts etc. They fit nicely in my cooler, and they stack well if I need more than one.They haven't leaked on me, but I also don't put liquid things like soup in them. The lid snaps on securely and doesn't pop off from bouncing around in the cooler. The containers have not cracked from being beat up with everything else in the cooler, which is appreciated.For the material, I would say they are as thick as the sturdy plastic containers that you would see at a Chinese take out. They aren't flimsy at all. I haven't used a steak knife in them, but I have used a butter knife to cut chicken with no problem.The containers are also dish washer safe, but it says top shelf only which is what I did.
