That is absolutely true... you can remove them. I don't know if it is intended that you should be able to put them back though. When I removed my screens to clean them, the retaining tabs all broke. So... then I was hoping I could find replacements without having to buy the whole vent system. I didn't have much information to go on. I know the sizes of the vent, the screen, etc. But I wasn't sure the size that I have would still be sold. I had a company name and a couple of part numbers VD0433 and VD0434. When I did a google search, I found these. But they didn't claim to match the vents that I have, and it wasn't clear the size I was measuring was the size reported on the description page. But... they came today. I installed them. They fit perfectly. These appear to be the exact same as the original... minus a bit of yellowing from age and what not. It took me all of 5 minutes to pull out the old ones and install the new ones. It's really simple actually. Just unscrew the ceiling flange, unclip two retainers.... poof. First, remove the ceiling trim screws and pull down the ceiling trim completely. The old screen holder snaps in on 2 sides; next to the knob and opposite the knob - Push up and pinch plastic in towards the center. You can inspect the galvanized hooked bracket to learn how to install the new one.
