Review: Superb! - The Plantronics Voyager Edge is an impressive headset, and packs the right balance of features, usability, and comfort to make it the go to choice for high end bluetooth headsets. Let me start by saying that I have for years been a Jawbone user. Without turning this into a complete Jawbone rant I will warn those comparison shoppers out there—a group to which I belonged—beware of the latest Jawbone offering. Having been a longtime user of the original Jawbone, then the Era, I initially sought out the new Jawbone Era, despite shoddy reviews. And this, even after having read such positive reviews of the Edge. Save yourself the trouble and go with the Edge. The Edge, unlike the new Era, provides great sound quality for the people with whom you are speaking on the other end. This would seem to be a primary qualifier for any headset that you are going to drop over $100 on. After all, who wants a headset that nobody can hear you on? I have had the Edge for several weeks and regularly solicit feedback on the call quality from those on the other end. So far so good. The Edge has great battery life. I listen to a lot of podcasts, audiobooks, and internet radio with the headset. I have found this to be one of the most enjoyable features of the newer bluetooth headset capabilities. Although not scientifically based, I don’t doubt the 6 hour talk time estimate, and the handy charger case makes it very convenient to extend the time well beyond that. The Edge is the most comfortable headset I have tried out of the box. I have very small ears and have historically used a custom made insert with my headsets. Although I will continue to do so, I have been using the small silicone insert that came with the Edge and have been pleasantly surprised. I can wear the Edge for about 2 hours at a time before my ear becomes fatigued. One downside, however, is that it doesn’t form a tight seal. This means you will often have to crank the volume up to be able to hear in noisy environments. This is a fairly small quibble, and one that will be fixed with a custom ear insert. The size of the headset was an initial detractor. I was used to the tiny Era (original) and had then tried the even tinier new Era. But I found that small size definitely does not equal better quality. While the size is considerably larger than its chief competitor at Jawbone, it is not a heavy headset, and is still very comfortable. An unforeseen benefit of the Edge’s size is that it is harder to lose. Much to my chagrin, I have lost or accidentally washed my previous Era headsets (while in pants pockets) more times than I’d like to admit. I don’t think I’m as likely to do that with this headset, which is a bit meatier and more apparent when in a pocket. Finally, the sound quality for streaming audio may be the one area in which the Edge doesn’t beat out the Era. Era’s HD audio is still superior, but not by a wide margin. I’m obliged to mention this, but I wouldn’t let it deter anyone’s decision on whether to use this headset over another, particularly the Era. Plantronics has created a winner here, and I hope to have many more months and even years of good use from this headset.
Review: The Voyager Passes the Test - My previous bluetooth headset was the Jawbone Era so I can compare the two. One odd thing on delivery, the two day delivery indicated it would take 3 days to delivery. On the third day I received an desertcart message indicated the package was delivered to my house. However it did not show up until the next day, 4 days after ordering it. What I really did not like was indicating it was delivered when it was not. That is a problem since it hides the truth from desertcart. That is not part of the 5 star of this review. Shipping I would give 1 star. The Voyager is around 2.75" long while the Era is around 2" long. Although the Voyager is 3/4" longer it has a small narrow boom. So the longer size is not much of an issue. It does come with a charge/carry case but it is a little large to carry in your pocket but I like the idea of protecting it with a case. And it is easy to keep the Voyager charged, just pop it in the case and it charges. The Era needs to be charged after a couple work meetings but need to wait till I get to an AC outlet. Seems like I charged the Era often but always had enough talk time. I do like the extra talk time on the Voyager, I don't worry about having enough time for the next conference call. The battery life is much longer on the Voyager but I never really had an issue with the Era. The ear piece in the Voyager is about the same as the one I use on the Era. The Era came with several different ear pieces. The Voyage ear piece is ok to me, no problem but I don't wear it all day long either. When I'm done with a call I remove it. The Voyager voice pickup is good, I tested it leaving a message for another phone line while talking in the Voyager. Then I walked up to a TV set playing at a normal level while talking. I could easily hear my voice all the way up to the TV but you can hear the TV sound in the background. Sort of like bits and pieces of TV sound. This is where I thought the Era did a better job. While using the Voyager talking with people while standing outside, I was told the conversation was clear and no noise from outside was picked up. I'm not sure how well it would do while driving in a car and dealing with loud trucks and horns beeping, etc. The Voyager instructions mention a procedure to recalibrate the microphone. I suppose background noise could be further reduced with some calibration. Will check more into that part. One feature I like on the Voyager is the mute button. The Era did not have that and I would always have to turn the phone on, enter the security code, then go to the phone page and press mute to turn it on/off. It was a pain. The Voyage has a mute button on the headset which makes it much easier. I use the mute a lot in conference calls but not much for personal use. There is no noticeable weight difference between the Voyager and the Era headsets. I know they are not identical in weight but both feel the same weight. The charge port on the Voyager is an easy fit while the Era was a typical micro USB which was a struggle to connect and disconnect. It seems like that part of the Era has the most wear. Overall I like the Voyager and think it is close enough to the sound quality of the Era. One thing I notice is that where you use the headset is important to the quality. If you are around a lot of noisy areas or if your calls require extreme quiet that would perhaps change which headset is better. I rarely talk in front of any loud external noise so I'm mostly interested in blocking the softer sounds around me. One comment I often was told with the Era is that people thought I was in a quiet room talking to them. In some cases I was just sitting in an open area with general noise of people. I have not had that comment from anyone using the Voyager but maybe I need to calibrate the pickup sensor.

**Q: Does this have a dedicated mute button?**
A: Yes it does. I wear mine in my right ear & the button is on the bottom of the boom near the ear. Press it once while talking & it announces "mute on". With their Hub app you can set how often it will remind you that your mute is on. I think the settings range from 1 minute to 15 minutes. Press the button again to turn mute off.

**Q: How does it compare with Voyager Legend in terms of noise-cancellation and battery life?**
A: My Legend fully charged for 7 hours where the Edge fully charges for 6 hours. Still, I find my use time to be almost identical. So, I think I'm getting almost the same talk time on an hour's less charge. I received mine about 2 weeks ago & I wear it all day & listen to a lot of music plus watch a lot of videos. 12 hours after putting it on, I get the low battery warning but by then it is almost bedtime. I am just as satisfied with the Edge as I was with the Legend!!! For me, the ONLY drawback is the ear stabilization on the Edge. IF it had the same ear hook system as the Legend, I would say it is perfect!!! It has taken me most of the 2 weeks to find the sweet spot on my ear for the ear piece cover to work properly. I was expecting that due to past experiences; however, IF you aren't patient with that learning curve, it could be very frustrating!!! I was bummed when I was forced to replace my Legend; but it was really time for an upgrade & the Edge works almost identical to the Legend so now I'm glad I upgraded!!!

**Q: How well does it Eliminate loud equipment noise**
A: My brother is my biggest critic when it comes to background noises while we're talking & this BT keeps him from complaining. It's been so cold here that I haven't been out in the wind to see how I like it on that account. My Legend never let me down & I'm finding the Edge to be of equal quality so I'm not anticipating any problems on our next windy day.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best headset I've found so far, but not perfect

The snap-in charging case is my favorite feature (and would be even if it didn't charge), It keeps the headset from coming into contact with other surfaces when not being worn, while still being quick and easy to retrieve when needed. Of course the charging is nice feature, too. The case design isn't perfect, however. It doesn't allow the ear tip to be in the optimal position on the headset when inserted in the case. A compromise is required that still leaves the loop on the ear tip distorted against the side of the case when stowed, and the mic boom pointing up towards my eye instead of down towards my mouth when wearing the headset. That's because a proper and secure fit in my right ear (after trying all 3 tip sizes) requires the loop on the back of the ear tip to be in the 7 o'clock position (would be 5 o'clock in left ear). I've seen other people wearing this model headset in the same odd-looking position, and now I know why. If you were to wear it with the mic aimed at your mouth, then it wouldn't fit in the case at all. Despite the odd-looking fit, call quality doesn't seem to affected. People say they can hear me very well and can't tell I'm using a headset. The headset doesn't totally eliminate wind and other background noises, but seems to do a decent job reducing them. I find this Voyager Edge to be much more comfortable than the Plantronics Explorer 50 I had purchased prior because it can be used without the over-the-ear hook (although it comes with one that is removable). This means it's also much quicker to get in and out of your ear, which can be done with one hand, and it doesn't interfere with glasses. Still, I don't think I could wear this all day like some people do. I can tolerate it for an hour-long conference call, but need to give my ear a rest after that. Pairing is easy and reliable, and sound quality is pretty good. I usually need to have the volume towards max, but this seems to distort the sound a bit. My primary use of the headset is for phone calls while using the computer, without having to use speakerphone. It's also helpful in noisy environments like restaurants or airports.
