It needs to be off the carpet so it doesn't overheat. I also have a fan blowing on it so it doesn't overheat. The first time I used it I placed it on the carpet. After 10 hours it overheated and the circuit breaker tripped. So I learned not to place it on the carpet because the bottom needs air circulation too. Now I have it on a stool and I use the fan too. Now it doesn't overheat. I think you wouldn't want to travel with it as it is a bit heavy.
