I absolutely LOVE this series!! I don't know how Rebecca Zanetti is able to write all of these characters with their own individual and unique personalities and still keep her readers engaged and begging for more!! This story is just another success and I LOVED LOVED LOVED it!! This story is centered around Quade and Haven's relationship and let me tell you... it starts off hot and fast and it just keeps getting better!! The dynamics between Quade and Haven are simply fantastic. I love the sweetness and ... I don't know the correct word... maybe 'honesty' between Quade and Haven. I found myself (again) laughing, crying, and sucked into this world. I thoroughly enjoyed Quade thinking toothpaste is 'delicious' and wanting to acquire more so he could eat it all the time, the nod to the movie Airplane ("Don't call me Shirley"), and the reference to a rose ceremony. The subtle hints to 'daily life', that I could relate to (& I assume other readers will relate to), make this story even more enduring. I love how Quade & Haven both learned to trust and love again throughout this story. Sure, in real life there aren't vampires, witches, Fae, shifters, etc, however the relationships that are built throughout this series is what makes it so fantastic. If you haven't read any of the books in this series I would highly recommend you taking some time and diving in to this world... you definitely won't regret it!! I loved the original Dark Protector series. With the exception of the annoying vegan chick, all the women were cool people that you'd want to hang out with and I also liked all of the guys too. I loved the Realm Enforcer books and was so excited to read this new installment to Dark Protectors but unfortunately Faith was an unlikable airhead, Mercy was immature, and Promise had all the warmth and charisma of a rock. In this book I really liked Haven, even though she had some of the problems of the other girls. All the women in this new series do silly things to prove how modern and independent they are but it always results in them getting hurt and captured and the guy has to rescue them and injure himself. Some of the situations they find themselves in are very contrived. Haven can't fight but never listens when Quade tells her to stay out of the fighting. She thinks she can be his backup but inevitably she's nothing but a liability and a distraction to Quade when he's trying to protect them. Mercy also got hit in the head so many times in this book that you'd be forgiven for thinking that she's playing a game of whack a mole where she's the mole. The problem for me with this new addition is that these feel more like action books with romance shoehorned in. But back to this book, Haven is a likeable character and I liked Quade. Some of the things in the book didn't make sense, like how after learning about her heritage Haven didn't bother to try to learn how to use her abilities. Haven and Quade spend most of the book together and the other members of the Seven dont come in until about halfway through. Hope is in this book but unfortunately she doesn't have the charm of her mom, and I can't make myself care about her or how her story plays out. Janie was smart enough not to trust the Kurjans and knew they were the bad guys. Despite all that she's seen Hope still thinks everyone can be friends and that no one is bad and people need to talk or hug it out. Janie and Zane have failed that child. All in all the series isn't bad but it's not as great as her earlier books. I'm looking forward to Benny's book but have decided to skip Adare and Grace's story. She seems like the type to do dumb things to prove how independent she is and Adare will save her but she'll stay fighting him and common sense to prove what a modern woman she is until the end of the book. This is a fast paced read that will make you laugh and smile at the hero and heroine. Haven is feisty, smart and independent, great to see her evolution of understanding of the new world she finds herself in. Quade of course is domineering, but in a sweet, protective way as is typical of these hero’s. Rebecca Zanetti has a great way of normalising her characters - I thought the toothpaste was a nice touch. The dialogue is punchy as usual and the story flows effortlessly - another page turner which will keep you enthralled to the end. Please, please, PLEASE could Adare’s story be next?!
