I learned that part the hard way and was about to have Dish tech come out until I discovered that. I also hooked up an external compact WD hard drive USB 3.0 500GB ( USB POWERED ) and for a $40 one time fee from Dish for the lifetime of this receiver for DVR service. I want to add and confirm you DO NOT I repeat DO NOT need an external hard drive that is AC powered. I've had zero problems with idle or the receiver going into sleep mode. In the receivers menu, there is an option for the receiver to not go into sleep mode. You can even turn the receiver off and touch the hard drive and the disc is still spinning and recording whatever you have it set to. You do have to watch whatever it's recording though as it's only a one tuner receiver. The pause, fast forward, rewind on live TV also works flawlessly. I also get close to 50hrs of recording time with a 500GB hard drive recording in HD and 185hrs in SD. I don't see a need for a 1T hard drive with this setup. So bottom line is I have had no lag nor any problems at all with the guide, DVR, Live TV. Not sure what others are experiencing with a few reviews I have read but I couldn't be happier. It performs even better than my older VIP211K. I have not updated the firmware at all either with these results. And the way it's performing, I don't ever intend to. We didn't have a special setup or anything. You can also ask Dish to be certain. **Q: Can this receiver play back Dish recordings from an external hard drive without being connected to the Dish network?** A: you can but you need a hard drive and pay a fee to activate had drive. no hard drive no recording. **Q: Hey guys ... are you sure you don't mean there is a 1 TB limit to the DVR? That's 1,000 GB and is the same as the 211K. You can't save HD to 1 GB.** A: OWNER OF ORIGINAL 4000 MODELS, 5000 AND 625. NOW USE 211K TAILGATOR with HDMI AND VIDEO, LEFT/RIGHT AUDIO OUTS. But you have to pay attention to just ONE THING. I found that the limitation is not in Quality, but Quanity of recordings....Not the size of memory, but the NUMBER OF RECORDINGS! YES, DISH LIMITS RECORDINGS TO 1000 (events) ON any size Hard Drive. Any thing over 1000 will not record. You need to delete recordings you don't want to keep to record new ones, regaurdless of HARD DRIVE SIZE. I like WD drives, but they don't have nor tell you the model of the acceptable drives the receivers can use. Also have a brother that uses 722's and can't re-establish older drives with new/refurbished receivers he's pissed. But, I think it time for him and I go to the Hopper for home unit, but I'll keep my Tailgator as long as they support it, to recev my programing locally and remotely....somewhere in the remote areas of New Mexico or Colirado...love my van/Tent and portable systems, including a honda generator to power my campsite... roughing it! Remember, its number of events on either size drive limited to 1000, but not size (sorta) of recordings, which are (approx.) In SD and HD. They are Shown in the top bar of events recorded. It varies...HD is approx 45mins to 1hr for every hr left indicadted. 1hr HD is equivlent to 85-92 mins SD. Just to let you know, incase you are litterally out of time! Good luck. I since bought another wally which worked fine with the first one. I am waiting on two more i purchased so i can dedicate one to each of our TVs.
