Q: My birds will not drink out of this, how can I encourage them?

Put something shiny, like a dime, in the cup. This is how my turkey poults learn to drink out of these.

Q: Is algae easily cleaned from all parts?

I have not had a problem with algae, however I have taken mine apart and cleaned without problem. I did have to take a pipe cleaner and clean the tube between container and cup as the water was not coming through.

Q: How is this automatic? In one of the pictures a person is manually refilling

You must manually refill the container, then the cup is automatically refilled from the container when the birds drink from the cup.

Q: Can the cup be removed to just use the nipple?

No there is no nipple. The cup could be removed but then you would have to buy a separate nipple. No point in that because RentACoop sells one of these with a nipple rather than a cup.
