Q: Does this feeder keep starlings out, or can they reach in far enough to get at the suet?

As soon as it was up, the Grackles and Starlings crowded onto it and began reaching in from the sides. They were knocking more chunks of suet to the ground than they would actually eat. Their mob tactic didn't allow for any other birds to try it. I tried putting the plastic pack back on the cakes, but they were still able to reach through to the outer edges... knocking tons of it to the ground. If the cage were a few inches bigger, it might keep them from destroying the suet and chasing other birds away.

Q: Are you saying that the green top is actuality screwed down tightly and squirrels are unable to 'jimmy' it up and off?

It if was screwed finger tight they wouldn't be able to get it off. I would actually advise possibly attaching a swivel to the top ring in case the wind could be spinning it.

Q: Can this be pole mounted?

There isn't a good way that I can see where this would sit stable on top of a pole. There isn't a way a shaft could run up through it. For mine, I got one of those cement block like are used under decks for footing that have a metal bracket attached. I bolted a 4x4 to it then hung a hanger off the 4x4 to hang this from. If you need a wider base for stability I gorilla-glued an 18" square patio block to the bottom of the cement footer. Works great, and can be moved around the property as needed.

remove the cover by unscrewing the knob---the small woodpeckers love it and the larger woodpeckers cling to the outside and can reach the suet by stretching their necks----it's the best!
