Q: Is this a large diaphragm microphone? My son is a rapper and that is what he wants and I 'm not even sure what it is.

Large means a larger circular surface as opposed to a smaller circular surface. When you sing, rap, play instrument, etc. in front of the mic, the sound that you generate vibrates against the diaphragm creating the electronic signal that is transferred through the mic into your recorder or PA system (in live performances; although generally condenser mics are preferred in the studio while dynamic mics are preferred for live performances due to the sensitivity of condenser mics to loud sounds, i.e., live performances). The size of the diaphragm (in this case large) affects the clarity, volume, EQ, and general signal quality that you get. Large diaphragm microphones (LDMs) are generally the choice for studio vocals, and any instrument recording where a more "deep" sound is desired. A large diaphragm microphone generally warms up the sound of what it's recording, which also leads to the myth that most LDMs reproduce low frequencies better than small diaphragm mics; this isn't true, in fact, small diaphragm mics are much better at reproducing everything evenly, including bass. You'll want a pop screen if using a condenser microphone for vocals; they're so sensitive to transient noises that the "P" and "SH" sounds you make will cause distortion. Small diaphragm microphones (SDMs) are generally the best choice where you want a solid, wide frequency response and the best transient response, which is the ability for your microphone to reproduce fast sounds, such as stringed instruments. Yes, you could definitely use this to record voice acting. Especially if you are recording from home. What you also need is an audio interface to record. I also suggest looking into the the Rode NT1 which is the newer version of this mic. Either one is a great mic. I own them both.

Q: what if i just want the microphone? can i just pay for that?

Now you can anyways but only in the nt1 and nt1000. It still comes with a clip and dust cover just no shock mount and cable. Its just called RODE NT1 no -KIT at the end.

Based on reviews alone. Why would one spend 144 more for this mic, over something like the MXL 770. Is the quality that much better?

Great vocals

I use this whilst working with my hypnotherapy clients and to make recordings. It makes my voice sounds fantastic, far superior to even to of the range plug and play microphones. It needs a little more equipment. I use mine with a Focusrite interface.

Anniversary mic vs Rode NT1A mic - same but with big price difference?

I am very disappointed that despite the Anniversary mic pack and the original Rode NT1-A voice pack being the same apart from its packaging there is a big price difference of £185 for the former and around £140 for the latter original one which I thought I purchased. I feel gutted with the overpricing!
