Kentucky Woods Bourbon Barrel Cake (3.2 pound)

I started buying these a year or two ago directly from Kentucky Woods. I was ecstatic when I found them on Amazon. Why? Because Amazon has the best purchase interface in the world and I easily sent Kentucky Woods Bourbon Barrel Cakes as Christmas gifts! Anyway it is now easier than ever, to buy the most out of this world cake, made in Kentucky. If you love the taste of Bourbon, you will love this rich delicious cake. It makes a great gift. I know, I bought several, One for myself too!

This is one of my favorite cakes now. I also sent it as gifts to family and friends at Christmas. Everyone loved it!

When I saw the fancy wood crate-barrel box cradeling this delight in the store, I wanted it! II need to order directly from the baker / merchant, as they quickly sold out in stores in the South. I received this cake a week befor Christmas, and anxiously unwrapped it. I looks devine! Unfortunately, when I cut through the delight, I found the yellow cake and Chocolate to be extremely lop-sided! The chocolate was also markedly more moist than the yellow. This was a little disheartening to serve to guests, and pay $30+ for! In honesty though, it was enjoyed....but not entirely eaten....and then forgotten. The frosting/glaze is surprisingly balanced and not overwhelmingly sweet. Yes it does have a bourbon tinge to it, to my surprise. I did try it with a jigger of, actually Kentucky bourbon, and it was delicious. Ok, in-a-nut-shell, NOT as good as my wifes pull-apart............or anything else!

The picture showed caramel and chocolate striping back and forth on the cale and lots of nuts. These were not on our cake. The cake itself was delicious and we did enjoy the rich flavor and we were not disappointed in the cake itself. But it would have been nice to have the cake look like the picture.

This was a disappointment., First, there are two layers of cake, the bottom one is chocolate and the upper one is yellow. Although both are nicely moist, neither has any flavor and we tasted zero chocolate in the bottom layer. Second, the enclosed information card states that there is no alcohol in the product, only 'essence of bourbon', which translates into only a slight bourbon flavor and we could only detect that in the sugary/nutty topping. Liquor cakes can be delicious but one expects to enjoy the real deal and have the flavor (amaretto, bourbon, etc.) come shining through. The round wooden presentation box is made of coarse wood 'peelings', for lack of a better word, and is attractive and has a fresh wood scent. It's nothing spectacular but could be used later for miscellaneous items as the wooden lid does fit well. I'm going to continue my hunt for a real liquor cake for the holidays.

Honestly, I wasn't impressed. I ate it, because I paid for it, but I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as I would have liked.

This is the real deal! We bought this cake before and loved it. You can smell the bourbon when you unwrap! It is well wrapped in plastic and comes in a wooden box! They also packed in a large cardboard box filled with styrofoam “S”. It was well cared for in packing. Make sure you don’t get the smaller imitation online, other companies sell.
