Q: Will this work in below zero temps?

I live in the UP of Michigan, heart of winter we have -20 and that's before wind chill. Yes this will work. I use this on the outside along the bottom of my garage door to keep the door from freezing close/stuck. Also on my threshold to the side door to my garage right after bad freeze after a semi melt. While it is not as bad as some brands it's not 100% pet friendly. (haven't found one yet that truly is) I push broom or shovel the melt off the walk way as it does annoy my paws and claws.

Q: Has anyone else had pets react very badly to this stuff?

As with any salt you get its always best to wait for the melting to end before your pets walk on it. Like already mentioned here, salt on ice instantly creates a super cooling effect & this extreme cold creates severe nerve pain to delicate skin/paws. Why we see neg reviews on pet friendly salts also stating paw pain if you look. If you don't wait till ice melts your pets can in fact suffer regardless of salt brand/design. It's sort of like our brain freeze, sometimes we feel it sometimes we dont but we all understand that pain can occur at anytime if we dont slow down eating ice cream to avoid it. Same way with your pets paws on ice/salt so it's best to wait for ice to melt then its fine. So just have some patient's for pets sake..lol

Q: is it safe for trex deck?

It's rock salt, it is corrosive to deck screws.

It's mostly rock salt (Sodium Chloride) with some Magnesium Chloride and CMA mixed in. Considering the properties of rock salt, and especially Magnesium Chloride, this product is highly unlikely to be any safer for pets than their pure Calcium Chloride ice melt. Just another strategy for making sales in a very competitive market. Far from an uncommon occurrence. The Sodium and Magnesium Chlorides are also more damaging to vegetation, concrete, and metals than is Calcium Carbonate. I would be surprised if adding a small amount of CMA changes for this fact. Not to mention, Calcium Chloride is a far more effective ice melter; in terms of speed, temperature, and efficiency.
