Q: Can the handle be locked in a sideways position?

Yes, handle can be locked/tightened in any position. It can also be completely removed from peel.

Q: Anybody have trouble tightening enough so it doesn't spin? Mine never stays straight. It always comes loose.

I don't have that problem, mine just locks in place when I need the handle & folds as it should when stowing it for storage. I tried and I can't get mine to spin. I don't know what to tell you other than it's not ment to spin but I'm pretty sure you already know that. I suggest you give the makers of this a call and see if they can be of help.

Q: Is it 12" wide or 14"? My Bertello oven is 12" wide.

It is 12 inches wide and 14 inches long. The wood handle is 13 inches long and overlaps the metal peel by 2 inches, so the overall length including the handle is just over 25 inches. If your oven isn't at least slightly over 12 inches wide, this peel probably won't fit.
