The Strings are False: An Unfinished Autobiography by Louis MacNeice (2007-09-06) Paperback – 1 Jan. 1709

This was a wonderful work to read - I'm surprised it now seems to be a minority item. The book cleverly stitches together several autobiographical versions (kept secret by MacNeice, in the hands of his executor, for reasons of confidentiality) and related auxiliary material (biographical material from those who knew MacNeice well from childhood and adolescence - during school days for example - and times later). Collectively, they give profound insights into the poet Louis Mac Niece, as well as providing background to the emergence of conditions precipitating World War 2, and then the aftermath of war and how it resonated right into the new world that emerged in the 1960s.
